Types of Paints
1. Oil Paints
Consisting of colour pigments suspended in linseed or synthetic alkyd oils, these types of paints are suitable for surfaces that are not regularly painted. This includes doors, windows, walls and other metallic structures. We usually apply in 3 coats, with the first coat being the primer, followed by an undercoat. Lastly, a finish coat performs for a more durable and aesthetically endowed surface.
Although this type of paint is long-lasting, you should avoid applying it in places that are high in humidity. We can add Turpentine to oil paints to reduce their viscosity for more ease during application. Then, we add furnish for a more glossy appearance on the surfaces before we are about to paint.
2. Emulsion Paints
This type of paint can be both oil or water-based. It typically contains cobalt and manganese, which act as driers. This is suitable for places with high humidity content, such as bathrooms, ceilings and busy kitchens where steam is usually present.
3. Enamel Paints
These waterproof paints form hard and glossy coatings when applied on walls or other surfaces, making them a favourite to painters, especially when a high-end look in a home needs to be achieved. Enamel paints are also famous for their chemical-resistant properties and their ability to retain their colour for long durations.
This makes these types of paints suitable for use in both exterior and interior decoration. However, they can be pretty expensive since a titanium primer coating is usually present before applying these categories of paints.
4. Cement Paints
Usually, in powder forms, this kind of paint needs to be added to water to form a consistency applicable for painting. They are waterproof and traditionally incorporated in both external and internal surfaces.
We can apply two coats to prevent dampening on the surfaces we painted on.
5. Anticorrosive Paints
Made up of zinc oxide, zinc chromate, red lead, fine sand and linseed oil as the binder, this paint brand is used on surfaces prone to rust. They prevent direct access to air and moisture, thus slowing down the rate of corrosion on the surfaces painted on.
This paint is not suitable for DIY projects. Please ensure that you engage a pro if you are to use this kind of paint.
